WE love the soccer programs at DUSC. They have been an integral part of our kids development and that of so many of our friends. It's hard enough to find space for kids to play sports in New York City, yet there are SO MANY kids and families here. Please don't take these fields away from all the kids who depend on them, especially in the name of development. If done right, NYC can develop AND include enough space for sports programs. That's the meaning of responsible urban development.

Dear Sir / Madame,
Our vital enjoyment of this city is based around the ability to go outside and kick a little ball around, with a bunch of other people. Our sport brings families together / communities together / everyone together in the singular pursuit of having fun. With each passing day, these spaces are getting gobbled up. We desperately need Pier 40 to remain primarily a place of fun and exercise.
Sincerely,
Paul Grieco

Pier 40 is an important part of life for all NYC families involved with sports! As an adult, I played in competitive games and practiced on Pier from 1999 onward (I remember when the turf was newly installed, and my club, Barnstonworth, was thrilled). Now as a downtown parent, I am grateful that my children's soccer practices are at Pier 40, allowing us to get from school to the fields in a reasonable amount of time. Soccer and other field sports requires large uninterrupted expanses of turf and there’s a paucity of this, as we all know.
Children benefit from their membership in a large, well-organized club like ours, DUSC -- they share the field with hundreds of other children in all age ranges and I love the fact that my 7-year-old boy sees teenage girls’ teams playing a competitive match, and that my 11-year-old can help the younger boys warm up before his own practice. The kids are inspired by each other. The smaller neighborhood fields don't permit this kind of cross-age-group, -skill level, and -gender crossing. And we parents benefit by being able to meet each other, strengthening our bonds and our community. Pier 40 is conveniently located and the field space crucially allows hundreds of families to keep their kids involved in sports. If we had to travel to Randall's island or Brooklyn or beyond, we, like many families, would have to consider withdrawing our kids from sports.
Most importantly, however, the city has enough development to accommodate offices, commercial and other kind of uses. I actually can’t believe we have to agitate for the fields to be protected. Why is this not a given? The land is public land nd the public is desperate for more uninterrupted open space—not small patches of lawn or more small parks. Hudson River Park has been so beautifully developed over the years, successfully bringing the city’s inhabitants to the water's edge, and bringing us all great pleasure. We love the diverse range of recreational activities that we c

Free space for sports and outdoor activities for local communities everywhere is not a luxury, it is not business, it is VITAL for our children, families and all individuals. It is an essential RIGHT for taxpayers.

I urge CB2 to save and enhance the sports fields and ensure open space for the community. Please allow some commercial space like offices to generate revenue but not at a loss of space for parkland and play fields.

Please help rebuild the athletic fields and include new facilities at Pier 40 as families, especially children are in dire need for more athletic field space in this area of NYC.

As the parent of an active 9-year-old, we find ourselves at Pier 40 frequently, and doubling the field space there would be a MASSIVE help to crowding.

DUSC serves the youth of this community in immeasurable ways. It would be a real misstep to not include and consider their position when considering the remodeling of Pier 40.

Enough with the billionaire playgrounds! Please consider more playing area for children of moderate to low incomes to be able to play sports here. This is a must!
