The state finally dropped that ridiculous liquor surcharge for our fire companies and veterans posts. It took constant pressure to force them to fix their own mistake but we did it. Keep your eyes open to make sure they do not try to squeeze these organizations again.

Liquor Surcharge Waiver for VSOs and Volunteer Fire Companies

Pennsylvania Representative Jerry Knowles of the 124th District has introduced a bill (HB 1901) which seeks to establish a waiver of the new liquor surcharge fee of $700 for Volunteer Fire Companies and VSOs (Veterans Service Organizations) like American Legion Posts.
The bill seeks to address the financial hardship imposed when the original bill returned from the Pennsylvania Senate with the surcharge included and was signed into law by Governor Wolf as ACT 39.
The new bill has the support of both Veterans Affairs Committee Chairmen Barrar and Sainato as well as 18 other co-sponsors. HB1901 has been referred to the Liquor Control Subcommittee for review.

The momentum behind this petition is proving that Pennsylvania VSOs and fire companies will not let Governor Wolf and the legislature squeeze them dry. We are forcing them to look at the mess they caused with Act 39 and they cannot ignore us much longer.

Please take into serious consideration the waiver of the $700 for American Legion Posts. These posts spend a significant portion of funds to help veterans who are hospitalized or homeless!
OUR POST 170 COALDALE PA CAN'T AFFORD THIS HIGH COST FEE ON OUR LIQUOR CHARGE. OUR POST INSURANCE COST 5000.00 WE WILL SOON BE BROKE.
I do not under stand how Pa can charge a surcharge of $700.00 when the state sells the liquor. The Veterans and Volunteers both have protected our land and homes and now you want to add insult to injury.
At a time when Our Veteran Service Organizations need support, our state treats them like a commercial cash cows instead of promoting their ability to serve veterans and the community. It is remarkable that they seem to forget the remarkable programs fostered by the Veteran Service Organizations. Is the state so strapped that the non-profits must be penalized?
ALL VSOs are currently struggling just to stay open and attract new members in the face of a declining military population. The $700.00 surcharge only serves to INCREASE the level of this struggle.

The $700 HB 1901 Liquor Surcharge Fee is funding that could be given back to our community (e.g., fire or police departments or scholarships earned in American Legion Scholastic programs by deserving youth). HB 1901 negatively impacts our ability to do this as a 501(c)(19) non-profit.
