Our Downtown Cedar Rapids Farmers Market is something we should all be proud of. In 10 years, it has grown to become one of the largest open-air markets in the Midwest. During that time, our four-legged friends have been welcome to attend, as long as they behave according to the following rules:

  • Pets must be on a leash no longer than three feet and must be kept by their owner’s side at all times.
  • Pets must be under control and well behaved while in the market venue.
  • Pets must be kept away from produce, plants and prepared food products.
  • Pets must be sociable with those attending the market (including humans and other animals) or they may be asked to leave the market.
  • Pet owners need to be understanding that not everyone is an animal lover, or comfortable around animals.
  • Pet owners must clean up after their pet and need to bring the appropriate items to do so.

Sign-up to show your support for dogs that are on their best behavior being allowed to attend our great Farmer Market!

Updates

July 6, 2015

The emails I receive from market organizers remain cold and largely dismissive of why these dogs belong at the stalls. It is exhausting to keep explaining that a controlled animal is a part of our community life. I am looking into a formal meeting request now because this silence from them cannot continue.

Love seeing all the dogs when I go to the Farmers Market. If all parties are responsible (dog owners and parents of small children) it shouldn't be a big issue.

Love all the vendors that sell dog items as well as people items that are so accommodating and friendly to me and my pups!

My puppy loves going to the Farmer's Market, it's so great for his socialization too. I have yet to see any issues with dogs and for those of us who do not have children, they are our children and we want to bring them just as much as those who want to bring their human children.

Seeing all the dogs is one of my favorite things at the market! It's an outdoor event and if they are peaceful pups, they deserve to be there!

The current rules work and I have been at almost every market for the past 5 years. I have only seen a couple of instances of someone breaking the market rules. If it isn't broken why fix it.

Seems reasonable to allow dogs under guidelines for control of pet, safety of others and their pets as well as in proximity to food goods people come to buy. Could be logistically difficult for farmer's market staff to monitor and enforce if a lot of people show up with dogs ....so you better be careful and patient to find a common ground that all can live with and enjoy. But I wholeheartedly support effort to find some form that allows one's dog or cat to attend market.

I vote to ban pets at the Farmers market. People need to leave their pets at home.
