I am honestly stunned to share that we finally have the green light for the Kelp Bar to return. This outcome belongs entirely to the people who kept pushing even when things looked stalled. Thank you for staying with me until the very end.

Final supporters
The trial ran for 18 days during the ISAF Worlds Sailing Championships in Fremantle held between 1st and 18th Dec 2011.
Kelp Bar defined what had been missing in Fremantle since the America's Cup in 1987 - a relaxed, artist run bar on the beach promoting the elusive "Freo vibe" of the 70s and 80s.
Joanna Robertson, in response to the community's support of Kelp Bar, is applying to the City of Fremantle and the Dept of Racing, Gaming and Liquor to be granted a bar license.
ACTION: If you would like to see Kelp Bar back in action, serving youdelicious mojitos overlooking the best sunset views in the Fremantle, then please sign this petition and tell us why you think Kelp Bar would be good for the community/ Fremantle/ Perth/ Western Australia/ the World..... UPDATE:To everyone asking when “Kelp Bar” will reopen... the answer is – It may never be possible until the Council mergers happen.
In two years of trying Joanna is still being blocked from within the City of Fremantle from even submitting a planning application for the resurrection of Kelp Bar to be considered.
Additional toilets need to be allowed to be built at Kidogo before a bar license can be considered. The Mayor does not like where heritage will agree the toilets should go, and heritage will not agree to what the Mayor thinks should happen at Kidogo - so precisely zero progress has been made in progressing plans to get Kelp Bar to happen.
How desperately sad…
Hopefully there are some Councillors in Fremantle who support the very simple, heritage approved toilet designs and with their lobbying, and your lobbying, of other councillors Joanna can be given the green light to actually submit a planning application...

I am still reading through all your notes about why a simple spot on the beach matters so much and I am honestly overwhelmed by your persistence. It is hard to keep going when the doors stay locked, but knowing you all still care keeps me at my desk fighting for this. We are not giving up while there is still a chance to bring that feeling back to the water.

The Kelp Bar concept is appropriate for the locale. It's low key and family friendly approach is good for the community to enjoy the beach and atmosphere plus support local business and the arts scene, so vital to Fremantle. I hope the council will see it this way also.
its a shame that Fremantle powers to be cannot agree on enhancements for the community. I saw the bar in January and checked in to see it was open. Come on Freo council and Heritage surely art and its supporters should be encouraged.
Please reinstate the licence for Kelp Bar at Kidogo Arthouse. Freo needs more relaxed, family friendly spaces like this. A wonderful idea!
Even though Kelp only made a brief appearance, this is definitely one of my favourite spots for a sunset beverage, great atmosphere and live local music... Seriously what the hell FCC? Get ur act together & approve the facilities before you lose even more revenue elsewhere... Support local businesses!
Love this spot - bring back the Freo vibe we've been missing for years!!! We regularly visit Sweetlips on the weekend and would be great to have a bar nearby - I use a wheelchair and many places are inaccessible in Freo...

Fremantle needs laid back open air venues in beautiful surroundings. It's the hothousing of venues with an emphasis on drinking huge amounts of alcohol in the presence of security guards that is likely to kill WA's fledgling social venues for civilied people. We need laid back peaceful venues where we can enjoy a conversation, not crowded night clubs.
