So Haringey NUT leader Julie Davies doesn’t meet management over wine and cheese and part with a kiss on either cheek. Neither did her two predecessors, Tony Brockman and John Elkington. Heads who expect otherwise need to become a tad more literate in the conduct of industrial relations More importantly, Haringey Council finds itself potentially the sponsor of two appalling historic precedents: one threatens the basic freedom to speak out of all union reps on facility-time throughout the U.K. and the other threatens the right of trade unionists to be represented by those they elect!
The most renowned union basher, Margaret Thatcher, with her 4 anti-trade union acts and momentous battles against the mining and print unions did not venture within light years of these extremes Did council members actually intend to find themselves championed by the Mail, the Murdoch Press and Richard Littlejohn? They really need to end this shameful business.

That this fiasco is happening under a Labour controlled council brings the Labour Party into disrepute. Can Kober demonstrate that her actions are within the spirit of the Labour movement? Can the Labour councillors who support Kober justify their actions to me as a socialist? Can the Labour Party in a run-up to an election demonstrate that they and its representatives of its party have any values that I can get behind when I'm in the polling booth?

Solidarity from our branch to Julie in her fight for justice. Employers cannot be allowed to victimise our representatives like this.

Julie Davies is the democratically elected representative of her teachers. It is totally wrong for any employer to 'vet' union reps or to reject the electorate's choice. Defending Jukie is right and just, and in so doing, we defend the right of all workers to choose their own representatives.

Men were transported to penal colonies for daring to stand up to abusive employers. This is simply an attempt to return to 19th century values of employer holds all the cards and we should simply be grateful for work. The right of choice to elect must remain in the hands of the members

The idea of a Labour Council undermining trade unionism seems to be par for the course nowadays. It is up to NUT to decide on who should represent them, not Headteachers and certainly not Haringey Council. Support Haringey's teachers in their strike action.

Yet again, in my long history as a parent of children in schools run by local authorities (i.e. since 1979 when my first child entered the system) I find myself bewildered, saddened and angered by how people in authority treat classroom teachers. Let's get back to first principles here: working people are entitled to 'associate' in order to defend their interests. This was won over many years of struggle. The NUT is the 'association' of the working people we call teachers. They are one of the teachers' unions. In order to function in defence of teachers - and of course the defence of teachers' pay and conditions is a defence of the education service that I, as a parent, and my children have benefited from since 1979, teachers need active representatives. It is a long established practice in employer-employee relations for union representatives to have time to work for colleagues. Ultimately, this is for everyone's benefit as it enables individuals to be defended where there are accusations of malpractice and the like, it enables decisions to be reached on any matter of dispute. If such matters are not negotiated, they fester and inflame. It is vital that teachers have a representative who can devote time and energy to these matters.
