We note with alarm the suspension of Haringey NUT Secretary, Julie Davies, by Haringey Council.

We are concerned that this is a politically motivated and baseless attack on an effective and well-respected NUT Secretary, with an exemplary record of defending NUT members in Haringey.

We assert and will defend the rights of Trade Union members to choose who represents them and will oppose with collective action any attempts to attack the Union and those who lead us.

One thousand people have now told Haringey Council that this attack on Julie Davies will not go unanswered. The bureaucrats in charge are clearly trying to break our union influence but this number proves we are not backing down.

Julie Davies is the democratically elected representative of her teachers. It is totally wrong for any employer to 'vet' union reps or to reject the electorate's choice. Defending Jukie is right and just, and in so doing, we defend the right of all workers to choose their own representatives.

I know from personal experience what an inspiring person Julie is. She cares passionately about children's education and welfare, and supports NUT members in the face of bullying by management.

I am a parent at HWS and am shocked at the misleading information given out by the school. Good luck striking teachers - you are giving our kids an important lesson in standing up for basic rights and against bullying and victimisation!

This is a crude attempt to oust a Union representative. Our children's education is suffering because of this unpleasant personal attack on Julie Davies. She may be irritating to them but that is often the way it goes with union representation.

I remember being intimidated and threatened by my Head just because I was a school union rep. Unless we fight for our rights, teachers will be ground down and unions will be made impotent.

The right of trades unions to select their own representative goes beyond just the NUT. Members of all trades unions should be concerned about this dispute. It is very worrying that a Labour council is supporting the management side against the union. They may say they are Labour but their actions don't reflect that in this case.

As Chair of the Yorkshire Midlands Regional Council I sign on my own behalf but also on behalf of the members attending our meeting of 03.03.2015
