The purpose of this petition is to gather an idea of the level of interest there would be in support of; a) inspection b) repairing c) maintaining d) reopening of the Ventnor R1 Cold War Bunker at St Boniface Down, Ventnor, Isle of Wight. The land is in control of the Air Traffic Control Service for the UK, which of course have no interest in the underground bunker or facilities. The R1 cold war bunker was sealed after a number of break-ins and rumoured metal theft. Access is not currently possible to the bunker and it appears to have been left to deteriorate. This petition will be shown to the land owners to show a genuine interest in reopening the bunker for the purpose of preservation and in the interest of the public. It is my proposal that a 'friends of' group and/or trust is created to 'take over' the bunker, to tidy up, repair and first of all light the bunker before looking to restoring and moving forward. Due to its heritage, I believe there would be a number of grants available to help support this project.
