Support Cambrian Teachers' salary request
Statement: " We support our teachers in their current request for a salary increase in line with the average increases being negotiated in districts throughout our region. We ask that the Board of Trustees of the Cambrian School District PRIORITIZE teacher salaries as the FIRST and MOST IMPORTANT matter in its upcoming budget considerations. "
WHY?
(1) Teachers are currently in negotiations with the district - as their contract is up at the end of June. They are asking the Board to prioritize their salaries in this year's budget - and we are asking for parent support for the teachers.
(2) There are three priorities that the Board has identified for the budget: a new ELA curriculum; technology for the classrooms and teacher salaries. Traditionally, teacher salaries have been last on the list -- so everything gets funded before them, and they are left with the few pennies, if any, and little to no increase.
(3) They have received a 1% increase in each of the last two years. A 1% increase costs the district $180k - all in. That's all. They just want a competitive salary and to pay their bills, like the rest of us. Cambrian compares unfavorably with Union, Campbell and Los Gatos in terms of teacher pay - if we don't pay our teachers competitively, we risk that they will go to a neighboring district, where they can be paid more.
