Burlington City Councilor Adam Roof UVM '11 (I-Ward 8) has introduced the Bystander Intervention Training for Establishments Serving Alcohol in Burlington, an 18-month pilot program that will train nightlife employees in Bystander Intervention in conjunction with their alcohol licensing. The UVM Student Government Association supports this initiative as it will promote safety for students who frequent downtown Burlington.

The volume of support has secured a formal meeting with the Licensing Board to discuss the logistics of this pilot program. I am currently drafting a letter to outline how we intend to integrate these training requirements into standard practice for local establishments.

bouncers and bartenders see everything anyway, it makes sense to train them
Downtown feels sketchy sometimes so this is definitely needed
Need to keep our community safe

We need to hold establishments accountable for maintaining a safe environment, and this program is a great step toward that.
