Dear Sir or Madam -

On December 26th, 1944 a US B-17G PFF bomber nicknamed Sugar Report (S/N 44-8186 / 32nd BS, 301st BG, 15th USAAF) crash-landed on a field air strip of the Red Army near Hatalov, Slovakia.

En route from Lucera Airfield near Foggia, Italy to bomb Blechhammer South synthetic oil refinery in south Poland, the plane piloted by 1st Lt. Ralph H. Kagi was hit by accurate flak.

Damaged, dropping bombs along the way, the crew decided to try its luck and head towards the front-line.

Luckily, they managed, although the plane was damaged beyond any possibility of repair, to land. The local people and the Soviet airmen were helpful in facilitating their stay and the following return home to base.

After 52 days the crew returned via Poland, Ukraine (Poltava), Iran and North Africa to Bari, Foggia and finally Lucera Airfield.

In memory of this event, place and people involved, we would like to place a small memorial near the location of the former air strip. To ensure financial backing of our project we would like to apply for a donation from the Small Grants Program of the US Embassy in Slovakia. The deadline for submissions is January 16th, 2019.

Therefore, we would like to ask you for your support which could increase our changes for a donation.

If you have any question regarding the story of Sugar Report, its crew or anything related to our project, feel free to contact us at [email protected].

Thank you for considering our request, your interest and support.

Best regards,

Pavol Hornak
Project Coordinator

As the son of a 15th Air Force veteran I urge the embassy to help with a donation to memorialize the crew who served their country so they are remembered for their service. Thank you, Jim Garver on behalf of Richard Garver, SSGT, 15th AF, 98th BG, 343rd Squadron.

As the unofficial historian for the 32nd, I hope this monument gets built. It would be a great honor for the crew of Sugar Report to be honored.
