The Arauni has been currently worked on by skilled tradesmen under the guidance of a highly qualified Museum conservator.
As from 24 October 2014 all the good work that has been done by this team will come to a halt. It is a lost opportunity that will result in the quality of the restoration been compromised.
The Short S. 45 Solent MK IV ZK-AMO Aranui flying boat arrived Auckland Harbour on its last service September 15 1960. The aircraft is the last of the big flying boats built specifically as a civilian airliner for regular passenger services.
New Zealand has the last remaining short Solent MK IV left in the world.
The Aranui is housed and on display at the Aviation Display Hall at the Museum of Transport and Technology (Motat) in Auckland.

This petition is misconceived. As you can probably appreciate the restoration of the Solent is a complex, time consuming and expensive undertaking and it needs to be done in stages so as to ensure that it is done properly. The last stage (i.e. the restoration of three of the cabins), which was supported by Air New Zealand, has come to an end. The next stage is subject to funding and while we have set money aside for this in our 2015/16 budget we are looking for a sponsor that will enable us to start before the next financial year. If you want to support the restoration, it would be a lot more constructive to make a donation to the museum. So far as our strategy is concerned the Solent is one of the museum's core heritage objects and the 'Coral Route' was and is a fantastic example of Kiwi ingenuity and innovation in practice and it is a story that we intend to highlight and tell going forward. Doesn't fit the new boards 'vision'!?! So how does an incomplete restoration meet the vision?

When I was a little girl I remember watching the flying boats down at Mechanics Bay in Auckland. An amazing sight it was too.

Is this some more ill-informed decision by money hungry executives who have no appreciation of our history? Having worked on this aircraft back in the 60's and 70's, of course I want to see restoration completed.
