THE GOVERNMENT'S PROMISES OF A NORTHERN POWERHOUSE WERE OBVIOUSLY PRE-ELECTION VOTE CATCHING LIES - IF NOT THEN LET'S SEE OSBOURNE PROVE IT IN NEXT WEEK'S BUDGET. STATDMENT..

Let cross rail wait instead - improve our services as a priority

It's about time the North got some improvements to the rail network instead of the South getting everything.

Yet another broken promise. How can we believe anything that Osborne and the rest of this Tory government say. Read what Osborne said in his speech on 23 June 2014 at the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester. https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/chancellor-we-need-a-northern-powerhouse This is an extract " How do we build the Northern Powerhouse? By joining our northern cities together – not physically, or into some artificial political construct – but by providing the modern transport connections they need; by backing their science and universities; by backing their creative clusters; and giving them the local power and control that a powerhouse economy needs". So come on Osborne, don't renege on your promises.

Complaints that the country won't be successful if all funding goes to the south east but still maintain funding to the south east...change your perspective to maximise economic success.

Stop all spending on Crossrail and other London projects. Electrification has been spreading all over the south east for the past 50 years (in the sixties it used to be steam trains to Dover - not for many years though, it was electrified in the late sixties) We've had damn all since the West Coast electrification, apart from clapped out diesels and 30 year old hand-me-downs for the new electric services to Liverpool. Any new diesels have been taken off us for those poor people in the south who couldn't possibly be expected to ride on a Pacer.. The per capita subsidy to the south east is 20 or more times what it is here. I think the cost of Manchester Victoria station upgrade is c. £40M while £740M has been spent on London Victoria's booking hall alone. Mr Osborne must be made aware that the "natives are getting restive"

Delaying the improvements between Leeds and Manchester are estimated to be costing over £7 billion a year in lost productivity. Yet there is no proper business case for London's Crossrail which has money lavished on it (over £20 billion and rising). Ridiculous financial incompetence. Get a grip ...

I'm appalled at the lies you Tories spout. You pledged to electrify the rail lines in the north, but now you have decided not to. You are a LIAR and a Thief, and the sooner you lot of thugs are out the better.

Completely agree, as someone about to rejoin rail commuting in the North and having experienced it in the past, I want a better service and not for all the money to be pumped into London until this is sorted properly.

Personally I think the North ought to become independent of the South East . At least an independent City/regional state of Manchester.

I can't believe that this scheme is being side-lined. It was bad enough that the Woodhead line to Sheffield was closed but the Woodhead and Snake passes and the M62 are becoming impossible to rely upon as east/west commuter routes simply due to traffic volume. The new line is way overdue and I hope the voice of 'The Northern Powerhouse' booms loud!! Best of luck with your campaign.

Why always focus on London & the south. They get new trains and we get the old ones. Isn't it time to focus on the north instead?
