Stop Sign Installation for School Zone @ Stonegate/Aventerra

This is a main intersection ONE block away from Mammoth Heights Elementary where many children and families cross by foot, bike, or scooter every single school day. Cars drive very fast, as this is a main thoroughfare between S. Chambers Rd. & Jordan Rd with a 35-MPH speed limit and blind curves in BOTH directions. The school signs are not only VERY small and hard to see, but they are too close to the intersection to make much difference. Despite the proximity to the school there are NO crossing guards here in the mornings or afternoons which only exacerbates the problem.
Accident information provided by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department. Photos provided by the Sheriff's Department and by petitioner. MOST RECENT PICS TAKEN MAY 23, 2025.

Between 2017-2023 there were 13 accidents at this intersection (up from 0 previously) due to the population boom in the neighborhood. Updated stats between 2023-2025 will be added soon, but another accident occurred this morning (5/23/25) so there have surely been now been way more than 14! Near misses are FREQUENT and it is only a matter of time before a pedestrian fatality occurs.
All previous efforts, including crosswalk marks, yield signs, and fluorescent signage have failed. Because of the curve, and because this is a main thoroughfare between 2 major roads, cars speed through here without foresight.
The pedestrian underpass near Keystone has also failed to solve this issue. Families crossing further west would have to backtrack for several blocks to use it, and for children walking or riding alone, the isolation of this area and tunnel is an added safety concern. For families in a time crunch during commute hours, this is prohibitive. In inclement weather, there's even less chance people want to brave that icy tunnel! This underpass is NOT a reasonable solution for anyone living closer to the Stonegate intersection just trying to get to and from school at Mammoth Heights or Chapparal twice a day!
A stop sign is the ONLY logical answer to this problem. Stop signs are not only the most EFFECTIVE but they are also the most COST-EFFICIENT. Blinking lights are expensive to install and maintain, and they do not work as well. We have seen countless instances of drivers blowing through the crosswalks with blinking lights just up the road at Chaparral High School. We are not interested in this as a band-aid solution!
WE NEED A STOP SIGN for the speeding traffic on Aventerra!!
A stop sign is the ONLY WAY TO GUARANTEE THAT EVERY CAR WILL DRIVE SLOWER in both directions on this road. Traffic lights are problematic because they insinuate high-speed areas AND people tend to "gun it" when the light is yellow. A traffic light could actually cause cars to drive FASTER than they do now, which is the last thing we want - especially for kids crossing Aventerra from the next streets over like Keystone and Alzere - these crossings are already dangerous enough!
The county traffic commission says they've done their investigation previously and that a stop sign was not warranted, but we disagree. As the population has exploded, the needs have changed - and we insist they revisit their investigation in light of this new data.
From one vigilant parent to another, please sign - and help me get this petition in front of the people who can help.
