This petition is to show the Jackson County, Alabama legislature delegation that there are enough county residents against the use of biosolids, to warrant a government address of the practice.
Please be a registered voter and resident in Jackson County, Al, and sign the petition in support of a ban on biosolids in our beautiful community. You may be contacted to verify your voter address, as it is a requirement of the probate office for petitions of this nature.
Biosolids is a term coined in the United States that is typically used to describe several forms of treated sewage sludge that is intended for agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Although sewage sludge has long been used in agriculture, concerns about offensive odors and disease risks from pathogens and toxic chemicals may reduce public acceptance of the practice.
Chances are, that if you have been in the Flatrock, Bryant, Stevenson, or Rosalie area of Jackson County, Al; you have smelled biosolids in use. This practice is not only a burden on the environment, but the entire community. People that have lived here for decades are now being confined to their homes for weeks or months at a time due to the unbearable smell and flys that ensue. Please join in on the advancement we are striving to make in securing the future of our environment.

I tried 2 years ago to try and stop this in Steveson AL in rash on county road 53 but WITH NO avail. It was horriable.
I had cancer 19 years ago. So have a ton of other people around here. We don't need any more contamination on our beautiful mountain!
Please end this terrible practice. Flat Rock is a beautiful community. Lets stand united and not let some one destroy generations of healthy living for greed. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to protect the land.
Please share and sign. This has affected our communities here in Jackson county.. making kids sick, cancer.. sludge from human waste in Chattanooga! Just think.. people who have had radiation and are radioactive still put waste into sewers.. medications, chemicals.. how can this be healthy for our local crops?!
Bio solids are more than poop and your own dangerous household chemicals from your bathroom and kitchen sink. It is waste from hospitals including antibiotic resistant pathogens and staph, industrial heavy metal waste both deliberate and accidental. Living down wind within one mile will likely affect your health soon or later. Educate yourself. Don't let some clerk from a sewer treatment plant be the only source!
Biosolids are applied by prescription, just like your doctor does based on your age, weight, and metabolism, called an agronomic rate for the type of crop being planted for optimal growth and to keep excess nutrients from running off into the watersheds. And does not penetrate the groundwater either because applying to saturated fields is prohibited and setbacks from Wells are enforced by ADEM. Raw animal manure is full of pathogens, and not regulated or inspected, yet you have no fear and tolerate the odor. Check your local co-op fact sheet on the filler material in petrochemical fertilizer, say 19-19-19, compare that arsenic concentration to biosolids. You'll only have one test per year to go by, in comparison to a twice daily results available in wastewater testing, conducted by certified operators. Read about class A vs. B biosolids, EQ Biosolids, and how biosolids are good enough to support colonies on Mars. Do they stink? Yes. They smell bad because the CaO or lime that is placed in them to assure they meet pathogen reduction requirements off gases ammonia. Educate yourself. When applied in a responsible manner, are the safest fertilizer available.
Sen. Livingston, Where can I find a link to the bill for referendum vote proposed to ban biosolids please. I wanted to follow the story as an interested citizen. Chattanooga's biosolids were some of the highest quality in the nation being NBP (National Biosolids Partnership) platinum certification and independent third party audit verified yearly. Chattanooga is no longer participating in the program,but has many checks and balances to my knowledge for quality including regulations set by the EPA and the more stringent TDEC requirements for metals and pathogens. www.chattanooga.gov/biosolids www.chattanooga.gov/treatment If you read it says that the pH of the biosolids is 12.5 minimum when it leaves the treatment plant and that it has been doing a lot of good to bring former strip mine acidic runoff back to a neutral 7.0 pH allowing aquatic life to return to those streams and allowing previously fallow fields to support hay and eventually row crops. Biosolids are free to the farmers and those farmers save about $10,000 per 100ac. in petrochemical fertilizer cost. Industrial preatreatment assures that industries do not discharge any hazardous chemicals into the wastewater, because the wastewater treatment process counts on biological microbiology to treat the waste, the bugs themself are an indicator if anything toxic is passing into the treatment plant.

I live on County Road 91 near highway 117 and the smell from the use of biosolid fertilizer is atrocious! You can’t stand to be outside. This stuff should be illegal to use around humans.
