We need to keep green spaces and tree lined routes for our health and wellbeing- as well as contributing to the beauty of the natural environment. Cyclists will still cycle on roads and pavements regardless if there’s a cycle lane or not.

This is an absolutely ridiculous idea for Westerhope Village, for all of the reasons previously stated. Who on earth makes these decisions? Obviously not folk who live here!

Leave us a little bit of green please!

We need the trees for the environment, planting more trees not uprooting them. I want the trees left

We need to keep the character if the village don’t spoil it by cutting down trees that have been there longer than us I’ve had no bother giving cyclists room along that road spend the money on fixing the pot holes

We don’t need a cycle lane / path, a lot of cycle riders have already stated they are happy and able to get around without that. It will cause more uproar and hassle than enough. The village doesn’t need this!

Safe cycle routes can be provided without destroying trees which take decades to grow.

I am a cyclist but disagree with this particular project and the removal of trees in Westerhope. Some of these cycle lanes go nowhere after a short cycling section, and are inappropriate. Money could be better spent on other projects.

I have not found a single person who is for this so why on earth would the council so ahead with it, it’s our community so put it to a vote to the local people and I guarantee over 95% will oppose this.

Trees are much more important than a cycle lane.

To help the environment plus nature birds etc

Find a different solution. You don’t chop down trees. They provide us with oxygen, look beautiful, provide homes for nature, nourish the soil and keep the air cooler below their canopy. This is hideous.

The trees provide shelter. Fact streets lined with trees are cooler in the heat.

Spoken to many cyclists who agree they’re a waste of money-fair enough in city centres but in local towns and villages?

Will destroy the character of the village. You’ll just see the teenagers wearing balaclavas going up and down on those electric bikes!! I don’t see many cyclists going through Westerhope ever.

I have lived in this area for over 80 years and have seen many changes, but destroying these mature trees would be one of the worst. They are part of the character of Stamfordham Road, provide vital greenery, shade and shelter, absorb pollution and carbon, improve air quality and support birds and wildlife. Once these trees are gone, they cannot simply be replaced. The council must put the environment and our community before unnecessary destruction. Please do the right thing and save our trees.

I have lived in this area for 82 years and have watched Stamfordham Road change over the decades. These beautiful, mature trees are part of its character and should be protected. They provide shade, greenery and shelter, help clean the air and absorb pollution from the busy road, and give birds and wildlife a home. Removing them for an unnecessary cycle lane is a disgrace and completely wrong. I rarely see cyclists using this road. Please stop this needless destruction and save our trees.
