Utter madness by Newcastle city council as usual to chop down a load of fabulous mature trees. Trees not only provide shade in hot summers, but are home to birds, small mammals and insects. They also soak up water and avoid flooding. Typical - bulldoze, tarmac for the few couple of cyclists. They are destroying the aesthetic for local residents and no doubt will impact on their house values. Lib Dems are shameful!! Newcastle needs to retain all its trees and hundreds more need to be planted!

I lived in Westerhope and it would spoil the local environment if they were removed

Why should the trees have to die to put a cycle lane in place. Has anyone done a survey to see how many cyclists use the road. Westerhope is a lovely green spot and benefits from natural beauty which makes it feel like a village.

The infrastructure does not support this. All the new housing on Stamfordham Road has created busy, fast traffic through Westerhope. The village struggles with congestion and is dangerous with so many side roads and retail outlet parking joining this main road.

These trees are part of the village and have been for years why do we need more cycle lanes in a small village Keep the trees use the money on something more useful

We are in the midst of a climate crisis. Getting rid of trees that help purify the air for local resident from the heavy traffic is more beneficial than cycle lanes that barely get used, make the roads safer first before encouraging people to get on their bikes.

It’s an absolute disgrace pulling out trees which look lovely and add to the character of the village The council won’t pull a tree out in lowbiggen who’s roots are growing underneath a house and along the path causing a hazard

Got a bike lane beside mine. And guess what not one F-ing one uses it. They just stay on the road and make you go so slow. All that money spent on this is disguising.

I live in this area and oppose to trees, which have been there longer than many people who live here, being cut down for a vanity project to create cycle lanes that barely anyone will use!

Tree's help with air quality, that in its self should be enough to keep the trees. What has the world come to. Plus thare are many birds and wild life in them . People cycle everywhere and anywhere. the last thing westerhope needs is it to look and be less friendly to nature and the westerhope village in which it has always bee. This is a stupid idea . Keep the trees we need them .

Absolutely ridiculous idea, Westerhope is not London and there is no need for this mad scheme! I drive to Westerhope regularly and don't see the cyclist numbers these beautiful trees are being killed for. Yet another 'Let's get rid of money on stupid and nonsensical ideas' from Newcastle council!🤬

We need these trees more than a bike lane. Is this another waste of money like the bike lane opposite the RVI which is causing havock?

The village isn’t big enough for a cycle lane. The trees are more important. No one uses the lanes anyway
