Stop the 12.09% rate increase on agricultural land in the East Gippsland Shire!
The petitioners whose names and signatures appear hereunder petition the East Gippsland shire Council as follows -
As a consequence of the loss of farmer income across East Gippsland Shire caused by drought and depressed financial returns over a significant period of time, the exhaustion of farmers financial reserves as a result thereof, falling agricultural land values and farmers now desperate circumstances we, the undersigned, petition Council to stop the 12.09% rate increase on agricultural land for rating year 1st July, 2019 to 30th June, 2020 and to reduce Council rates to significantly below rating year 1st July, 2018 to 30th june, 2019 levels because of historically falling agricultural land values.

The feedback I have received from local farmers underscores the genuine financial hardship caused by current land valuations and the proposed rate hike. I am now preparing a formal submission for the upcoming Council meeting to present these concerns as a collective request for relief.

East Gippsland residents already pay exorbitant rates: now this, another kick in the guts for farmers!
Shame, shame, shame. It is tough enough battling with drought and the shire wants a rate increase. Where has common sense gone!!!!
Talk about kicking people while their down one of the places severely affected by the drought and they want to pull this it's just not good enough.
If i add an irrigator to my land and increase its value my farm rates go up. If a business in town adds $100000 piece of equipment to their factory , does their rates go up?
They won’t allow to build on small blocks which would increase revenue but they tax farmers through the roof no one will farm in years to come 7 days a week 24/7 for what
No more rate rises.
Ridiculous idea for a shire filled with drought affected farmers.
