Every Year, thousands of chameleons suffer inside major pet stores across North America. They are kept in tiny, constrictive cages without a proper diet, lighting or medical care. Many of these amazing creatures die in pet stores, or when they are bought by well meaning but ill equipped people. Chameleons need large mesh cages, with proper setup and care. While smaller cages are fine for some lizards, such as leopard geckos, chameleons are very delicate and hard to take care of, especially while young. Stores like Petco and Petsmart need to stop killing these amazing reptiles, and victimizing consumers who buy them. If they aren't prepared to take care of it, then they shouldn't sell it.

ive been reading through the stories people are posting and its honestly heartbreaking to see how many chameleons have suffered. im putting together a packet of these experiences to send over to corporate because they need to know what is actually happening in their stores.

petco staff seem to have no knowledge on the proper care of chameleons. I've witnessed this first hand at my local store. Chameleons bunched in together in glass tanks which have bad ventilation. Some of the babies i've seen are sitting there with their eyes closed, a sign they are sick. It's heartbreaking to see this as a owner of a veiled chameleon myself. Please petco educate your staff on reptile care!

Petsmart doesn't even follow the (limited) guidelines that they put in their care pamphlets for customers. Store employees know more about cat food than they do about these highly specialized pets, so your best bet is to always buy from a reputable breeder... but not before doing your research!

Reptiles of such complexity should not be allowed to be sold. The ailing chameleons I have witnessed would have been better off not hatching . All Chameleons are expert level as far as the one taking care of them, therefore Petco needs to stop supplying their stores.

We bought our now 10 mth old Jackson from a local Detroit area PetCo. He has had several health issues, related to his mis-husbandry. We were misinformed in purchasing him on many KEY aspects to keeping him correctly, sold a heating pad for the floor, a hide bark, etc....even a night heat light! Why in the world there is zero regulation on a living being that can healthily live 10 years is beyond me. Our "health warranty" the store includes for the 1st 30 days???? What a riot. We took him back once and rec'd the call he was healthy in less than 24 hours when he had a severe respitory infection. They didn't even perform a fecal for parasites. Our poor expierence is way we do not continue to purchase reptiles, reptile related goods, or other pets thru PetCo. Spending over $1000 at a chain in one month for a healthy animal and coming back v spending $1000 on a sickly animal, and never buying anything for our other pets/or future pets.....it's their loss.

Petco and Petsmart please stop selling chameleons. Your employees do not know how to care for these wonderful creatures and have no proper care information for people who buy them. Please stop selling them!
