The Yukon government has announced plans to build a new fibre-optic link up the Dempster Highway to Inuvik, which would connect with a new fibre line under construction along the Mackenzie Valley.

Minister of Economic Development Stacey Hassard said Northwestel has estimated the total cost of the Dempster Highway construction at $32 million “in the past couple of weeks.” Northwestel has committed “up to $10 million” to the project. Cabinet spokesperson Dan Macdonald did not confirm how much the Yukon government will contribute, and said the exact cost breakdown will depend partly on the results of an engineering report being completed by Northwestel. We want to stop this. Please sign the petition so the Yukon Government doesn't just give the . contract to Northwestel. Please also sign the petition asking that the fibre line be connected to Alaska through Skagway/Juneau and away from Northwestel's control which will enable competition in Whitehorse and better prices for Yukoners.

Let's stop Northwestel's internet monopoly together.

Updates

October 29, 2015

I have finalized a formal briefing document to present to the Minister of Economic Development regarding the Skagway connection alternative. My next step is securing a formal meeting with the Department staff to discuss why this fibre route is a necessary check against the current monopoly. I will update you on their response as soon as they reply to my inquiry.

October 29, 2015

The scale of this response has provided the leverage required to request a formal meeting with the Minister of Economic Development. I am currently drafting a letter to the department outlining our specific concerns regarding the proposed fibre-optic contract. Further updates will be provided once the meeting is officially scheduled.

Northwestel has been monopolizing the market without providing any enhancements... Get more competition so that the consumer can actually have some benefit; either lower costs or better services!

I have been in whitehorse over five years and using my internet the same than before or maybe a little bit more. I had 80gb and never were close to pass this and since i am in town i had to upgraded twice. Now i am at 300gb and closed to go over ?? This is stupid, they are playing with us for sure .... We need another company and lower price... Internet is actually free by satellite, we should not even pay or pay minimal for it....

I am a former Yukoner and the Northwestel monopoly is a very unattractive feature of moving back home.

Northwestel is a horrible company. The email bills and usage notices came in late constantly causing me to lose track of my usage and billing. I shouldn't have to set up my own data cut off point. I should be able to just ask them to do it.

Hope there are more cable/internet providers here in yukon so we have a choice on some plans and lower prices of subscription. And i don't get it, why do northwestel have a unlimited usage of data in residential? It's kinda unfair, unlike in other provinces.

And just how are any potential competitors to Northwestel going to be able to access this infrastructure in a cost effective manner?

Monopolies like the one we have here kill competition and make life hell for the consumer. Even as a proud liberal voter I can say that in confidence.

northwestel needs to drop price or offer unlimited the cost for internet here is absurd
