The new owners of around 10 acres across highway 181 from Walmart in East Fairhope are proposing a “high end Main Street retail” development “with a downtown Fairhope atmosphere,” including up to 40 condominiums. Shops and restaurants are shown on the drawings with downtown-like architecture.

The development is just in the preliminary stages, an artist shows what the project could look like if approved.

An Aldi is currently being built on 181 and county road 48 across from Walmart.

-Mayor Sherry Sullivan tells WKRG News 5 the city is aware of the proposed development, but at this point they have not seen the full scope of what the project might look like. The developers are expected to discuss their vision with the planning commission in the next month or two.-

If you’ve read this far, you may think there’s no stopping this development. How could you change anything?

A petition I created in 2017 against a condominium being built by the bay received more than 300 signatures. I stood at the city council meeting against this development and spoke my peace. I’d like to believe that petition made a difference in the city council’s decision, considering I know one gentleman in particular changed his vote due to my voice, spreading the voice of so many others also against the development.

Due to Fairhope’s moratorium being voted upon last year in order to slow development, I can hardly imagine large development such as a new downtown Fairhope being approved by…well…anyone.

Highway 181 has been under construction to be widened since 2018. Traffic has been a continuous problem and can only get so much worse with this kind of huge development.

Why ruin our old time original and unique Fairhope by trying to replicate it?

This would be detrimental to downtown retailers and restaurants. Plus there needs to be a study to determine if the infrastructure can handle this.
