We at Actor Awareness have created something called #WhyTheFee to question audition fees. In drama schools across the country they charge anywhere between £30-£80 for an audition. In no other industry do you pay for essentially a university interview. This creates a huge barrier for working class artists across the UK, because as actors, we are told not audition for just 1, but for numerous establishments. Then put travel and accommodation on top of that, which sets any family back a hefty sum of money. So I have started this petition to get as many signatures as possible, so I can go to various people in the industry and eradicate drama school audition fees.

The reach of this campaign has created the leverage required to secure a formal meeting with the oversight board. We are currently preparing a comprehensive briefing paper that outlines the financial burden these fees place on prospective students. Further updates regarding the outcomes of these discussions will follow.

I am signing this as it is ridiculous to expect working class performers to get anywhere in this industry by charging them at audition level. Universities dont charge to audition, neither should drama schools.

Any fee for an audition is a ripp-off. I auditioned for many schools in the 80s, and it was happening and strongly contested. Schools "admin cots" are already covered by the fees and grants they receive. They should not be charged for audition.

As a working class actor I found this a real barrier and it limited my applications due to the financial strain. Drama schools are screening a huge proportion of applicants out based on financial background with this process not talent.

The drama school audition fee was a huge barrier for me when I wanted to audition for drama school. I could only afford to audition for 2 as I didn’t live in London, meaning I didn’t get the opportunity to be seen by so many others.

I was a single mum, in a council house, working-class - there was no way I could afford to audition at more than one school. I gave up and sought my own way into the industry. It needs to be more accessible. I fully support this petition.

I couldn’t afford to audition for drama school as travel to London plus audition fees would have cost at least £60 per school. As a 17 year old from a low income family, £600-£1000 to audition for perhaps 10 schools was impossible.

Spent over £100 for drama schools/uni auditions this needs to end.

The Arts more than any other programme should stop charging audition fees.
