With Folded Hands we the people of Lahaul-Spiti place a request to you that the Proposed Power Project of Moser baer Company is being constructed at Udaipur of Lahaul Spiti District, which is a Snow Desert Area; the Shelly dam area is having thick forest trees of adult Deodar (Cedrus deodara ) Diar and hundred of other small and medium trees and shrubs .That Thousand of Juniper Polycarpos (Himalayan Pencil Cedar ) trees, locally known as ‘SHUR’ is an important endangered conifer tree species found in inner arid areas of western Himalayas. From Socio Economic and Ecological point of view Juniper ...is considered as an important tree species and regarded as sacred tree in Tribal Culture and Used as Dhoop in worshiping Deities. The natural as well as artificial regeneration of Juniper is quite low due to phenomenon of seed dormancy. Till date no success has been achieved in overcoming seed dormancy in this valuable endangered Conifer Species. it is pertinent to mention here that because of this proposed dam (hydel project) more than ten thousand (10,000) of small as well as big green trees will be sacrificed to set up dam for Shely Moser bear project. This will lead to Ecological Degradation unethical & unlawful Exploitation of Natural Resources in the name of Development and threaten the fragile environment of the tribal district. We urge immediate full stop on the construction of the project.

The stories shared by local residents regarding the spiritual and ecological value of our forest trees remind me why this movement is so essential. I am currently working to organize a formal briefing for the district officials to ensure they understand the long term impact of the Shelly project on our fragile landscape.

The growing momentum behind this cause reflects a shared commitment to protecting the delicate landscape of our home in Lahaul-Spiti. It is heartening to realize that so many people understand the true cost of losing our sacred juniper trees to industrial development.

This is a terrible idea. You dont destroy sacred trees and endangered species just for a power project. Keep our Lahaul valley green and leave these forests alone.
Development shouldnt come at the cost of nature. The juniper trees are spiritual for us and they cant be replaced. Cancel this.
