Stand Up for a Better HoCo BOE: Petition the Incoming Board to Reverse the Q3 Virtual Decision

The citizens of Howard County are appalled and heartbroken over the BOE's decision last night to reject the hybrid model and stay virtual. After town halls, thoughtful discussion, and months of the Superintendents team working on a plan, Mavis Ellis, Kirsten Coombs, Sabina Taj, Jen Mallo, and the student member saw it fit to just outright reject the plan. But in less than a month Ellis, Coombs, and Taj will be gone. We need the new board to look at this again and approve the plan based on metrics. We believe that if Yun Lu, Antonia Watts and Jolene Mosley can join Vicky Cutroneo, Christina Delmont-Small, and Chao Wu in following the plan put in place by the superintendent that we can get kids back in the classroom this year in a safe manner. By signing this petition you are asking the new board to immediately take up this issue and reverse the vote.

I was just looking at the count and we are almost at one hundred signatures which feels honestly surreal because it is finally gaining real momentum. If everyone who already signed sends this link to just a few people we catch the eyes of the board members who really need to see this right now because they are definitely paying attention to how much people care.

Keeping schools closed until the end of Q3 is a slap in the face of all those subtends with IEP, 504s, physical and emotional disabilities who NEED to be in school. OPTIONS is what parents need and STUDENTS should be at the focus of this discussion, nothing and no one else.
Making a decision in November for something happening in February and March is not looking out for the best interests of the kids. At least wait until closer to the date to reevaluate and make an informed decision!
How on Earth can you make a decision this far away? You clearly don’t care for the well-being of these children. Children, elementary school in particular, need to be in a classroom doing paper/pencil/scissor activities not dragging around text boxes with a mouse. NOT developmentally appropriate
Please, for my 2nd grade sons mental health, and for my HCPSS Occupational Therapist and her students who are having that toughest time, please lets get our kids back in school! We need to join the rest of the USA and the World in making in-person school a priority.
Virtual doesn’t work for everyone. There needs to be an option for parents to choose in person learning. After last nights decision, my 5th grader asked to drop out of school. Some students can’t handle virtual school for over a year.

The county should be planning to go back in person. Plans should absolutely involve safety metrics and be conditional. Why the outright rejection. Why do they care more about the teacher's union and politics than our children?
