Stamford Catholic Schools Against State Transportation Cuts
As parents who pay our fair share of local property taxes in
Stamford, who choose a faith-based learning environment for our children, and
who actively support the Stamford Catholic Schools, we believe that the recommendation
of the Appropriations Committee of the General Assembly of the State of
Connecticut to impose an incredibly unfair reduction of 80% ($2,876,000)
is ABSOLUTELY INEXCUSABLE.
We know that in our city of Stamford, where in some cases more than 50% of our students travel by bus to our schools, the impact would be highly and unnecessarily destructive.
Without busing in a City like Stamford, whose public school system is already SEVERELY overcrowded at every location, many families will have trouble accessing Catholic School education and have no place to turn. The demands on an overburdened public school system with antiquated infrastructure would be crippling.
We view this latest recommendation of the Appropriations Committee as another attack on our Catholic Schools system, and by association another attack on our faith.
WE DEMAND THE IMMEDIATE REVERSAL OF THE RECOMMENDED APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE CUTS TO CATHOLIC BUS SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION AND END TO THE COMMITTEE’S HISTORIC PERSECUTION OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION.
