Hello Neighbors,

In a recent neighborhood meeting at Kaywood Park, residents of Kaywood discussed the severity of the current spongy (gypsy) moth infestation and potential solutions. In that meeting, we decided to petition support of the neighborhood by collecting signatures to bring to a future Harris Township Board meeting.

This petition calls for the Board to contract for a spongy moth egg mass survey in potential mitigation zones during the winter of 2023-2024. If the results of the survey indicate it is necessary, this petition further requests the Board procure services for an aerial sprayer to apply appropriate spongy moth mitigation control to the Kaywood development in May 2024.

To combat defoliation and potential destruction of trees in the communities of Harris Township by the Spongy Moth, we ask you pledge your support by signing the following petition to be presented to the Harris Township Board of Supervisors on September 11, 2023.

Below are links to some information about spongy moths from the Penn State Cooperative Extension office.

August 27, 2023

I have been hearing from neighbors all week about the worsening condition of our trees. Send a quick email to the Harris Township Board members today to demand they address this infestation before the next season begins.

The momentum behind this push to address the infestation in Kaywood is clear. Email your representative at the Township office today to demand they prioritize our request for an egg mass survey. Post the link to this petition on your Facebook page to make sure our neighbors see the urgency.

Our Crabapple tree was severely damaged this year. Due to the damage, it began flowering out-of-season to compensate. Also, our Birch trees have been damaged to a lesser degree. Given the damage in other areas of the county, we are very concerned for next year. Mitigation by the township would be helpful to stop the spreading of this problem.

3 of my very large oaks had been damaged. Not to mention the horrible mess of chewed leaves and the poop droplets covering everything outside.
