Will your child be attending Oak Valley Middle School as a 7th grader next year? Are you disappointed that Spanish is not an elective option? While students who attend other PUSD middle schools are being offered an opportunity to learn a new language, Oak Valley students are not. Please share your frustration by signing our petition. We hope that a strong show of parental support will initiate a change to offer Spanish as an elective for the 2017-2018 school year. Signing this petition signifies your request that a Spanish elective be available to students enrolled in the 7th grade for the next school year. We hope you will also feel inclined to email your request for a Spanish course to Oak Valley’s principal, Casey Currigan. His email is [email protected].

Experts widely recognize that learners should be exposed to a foreign language as early and as frequently as possible. Please help us set up our sons and daughters for success. Exposure to Spanish at the middle school level will certainly support students as they prepare for their high school studies and beyond. Foreign language teachers at Del Norte High School also recognize the disadvantages of postponing language study. Poway Unified School District prides itself on meeting the needs of a 21st century student who can thrive in an increasingly competitive and global society. Let’s advocate for this important class. We appreciate your support and activism.

I have spent my mornings emailing the district office to ensure our families are not ignored. The silence from the administration is frustrating but it only motivates me to keep pushing for the language programs our children deserve.

Seeing this momentum grow reminds me why I started this for my own child. It is heartening to know so many other families feel this same urgency for our students to succeed.

Language is a critical way to have students in our country compete with those student from other countries who all learn English as a second language, starting in elementary school! This should be offered for sixth graders!

I attended Mesa Verde years ago (a PUSD school) and this was an option for me. It was very beneficial and counted towards my high school credits.

I teach middle and high school Spanish at CCA and PTMS. The sooner you expose students to learning a 2nd language is better! Many other districts offer Spanish in elementary school and in 6th and 7th grade. Don't let our students fall behind.

These are my grandchildren, and they are going to need Spanish throughout the rest of their secondary education. It needs to begin in the 7th grade.

A simple and casual query about the growing numbers and influence of the Hispanic population in our country and especially in our locale makes it imperative that our kids (and in my case grandkids) are conversant in Spanish. It's a no-brainer.
