Your Excellency,
We are hereby requesting you to return the Media Law, which was submitted to your cabinet on Wednesday, June 19, 2014, to the ministry in order to allow the journalists the opportunity to read, discuss and add their input to the law before the cabinet starts discussing it or submitted to parliament for ratification.
The Journalists are highly worried about the media law and submitting it to the cabinet before the media comment may discredit the law, which can't work unless the journalists given the chance to discuss their concerns in the articles.
Both the ministry and the hand-picked committee, which was supposed to review the Media Law failed to return it to the journalists and show the bills for discussions, but decided to hide and submit it to you, which is a betrayal to our trust to both the ministry and the committee.
DESCRIPTION
The Ministry for Information submitted a Media bill to the cabinet for discussion and approval. It didn't give the journalists the opportunity to discuss it and make changes or input.
The Media bill was initially prepared to counter the press freedom and control the independent media outlets for political interest.
The journalists, media workers and international stakeholders addressed the Media bill in 2012-2013 and the ministry agreed to give the Journalists the opportunity to discuss, comment and make their input and changes to the bill before it is submitted to the cabinet, but this promise fainted when the ministry submitted the bill to the cabinet with out informing the journalists except members of a controversial committee that consisted of journalists working for the ministry and other relative government offices.
Please sing the petition and tell the Somalia government to return the media bill to the Journalists for review and discussion in a transparent manner.
Best regards,
