Virgin Media have announced they will rollout a traffic management system designed to reduce the downstream speed of customers who download what they consider to be high amounts of data during peak hours (4pm-12am). Despite claiming that only the top 5% of downloaders on each speed tier would be affected, the traffic management system is being implemented at the same time as 20Mbps downstream services are being rolled out to XL tier subscribers, with Virgin Media expecting customers to pay an extra £2 per month for the previously unrestricted XL service. These new restrictions mean that customers could potentially be capped or restricted after less than 30 minutes of downloading time. Virgin Media are failing to take into consideration advances in technology and increases in file size. As a result of this traffic management, Virgin Media customers who use the internet legally for tv streaming will now face the risk of being unable to watch the likes of Channel 4's VOD service. XBox360 users will be restricted when they wish to download game demo's and dashboard updates. Customers who listen to streaming radio broadcasts will find themselves at risk of being unable to listen to their favourite online radio stations. These are just a few examples of the restrictions that Virgin Media broadband customers are now facing from a company who, at time of writing, are signing up new customers by advertising "super-fast, reliable service with no download limits"* Please sign this petition, which will be presented to Virgin Media CEO Steve Burch. You can also visit www.sn2ts.com for more on Virgin Media's traffic shaping plans and to sign our guestbook, which will also be presented to Mr Burch. * correct at time of writing on Friday, May 11 at http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/service.doid=2
