  • This petition is created on behalf of the 2024 year 11 class at St John Bosco College, Piara Waters, regarding the decision of the College Leadership Team to not permit students to drive to and park at the college.

We the undersigned feel this is not reasonable, prejudice and greatly disadvantages the students who have legally obtained their licence.

We wish to have an open forum where alternative arrangements can be discussed and agreed upon by the College Leadership Team, the parents/guardians and the students of year 11 2024.

Updates

May 9, 2024

We hit our first big milestone today and the administration finally has no choice but to acknowledge the frustration of the year 11 class. Post this link on your Facebook accounts and email the principal today to demand that open forum.

This idea of not allowing our children to drive to school is very disappointing. As a school that has taken on a 21st century approach in educating our children, as families & as a community we are teaching our children values & responsibilities of being young adults & all it entails for them to be fully equipped for the world as we know it arr supposeto be there to encourageand praise their growth. I'm sure this information is negative to them & is actually doing the opposite of what we are trying to instill into our children & stiffles their growth and independence as young adult

Students should be allowed to drive and park at the school, surely a designated parking area can be made available for them.

The school cannot stop students from driving to school. Once they pass they have a right to drive. Stopping them from parking in school grounds will cause issues with the residents in surrounding streets as students will park on verges or on the road in front of houses. Let our yr 11’s be responsible young adults. Stop disadvantaging them because they are the first year group to achieve things. Treat them like the young adults that they are. Stop controlling their every move

St John Bosco has become such a fantastic school that is growing bigger and better every year. The cars Situation has always been a problem at the school but excluding our young new drivers parking there cars at the school is discriminating against them and excluding anyone has never been a good idea or the right thing to do. It’s just isn’t fair at all. Surely we can put our heads together to resolve the issue (short term) so they can also drive themselves to school. Can we not open up a space for them to park. On one of the ovals or grass areas perhaps. Having such a big school built and not have enough parking for EVERYONE is going to need a long term solution factor in for the future and moving forward.

The surrounding residential areas are in a much worse state to support student parking than the own parking lot at the school, blocking this would cause more problems for everybody (yes staff included) as it is almost impossible to enforce these rules.

My boys travel a total of 3 hours per day on public transport to get to and from school and have been looking forward to being able to get themselves to school without having to leave home before 7am and not getting home until after 4:30pm. Preventing the yr11s from driving to and parking at the College is taking away the independence that we have been striving to instil in them. Many of the year 11s now also have after school jobs and having to rely on public transport prevents them from being able to work many shifts that are available. Students will still drive to school but will have to park on the streets which will cause additional congestion around the College and cause issues with the local residents - not a great way to create good relationships within the local community.
