Sign this petition to support assigned parking spots and oppose the move to unassigned parking next year.
Reasons for Concern:
The Dow High parking lot is already hectic and dangerous due to congestion.
Lack of designated spots would cause students to rush and compete for "prime" parking daily.
Increased potential for car accidents in a dense area full of inexperienced/first-time drivers, scanning each row for a parking spot.
Distracted and frazzled drivers—students and parents alike—will contribute to further disorganization.
Non-designated spots will add an extra element of stress and anxiety for students, especially for new drivers.
Students may have to exit one parking lot to enter a new one, resulting in increased traffic on the roads.
Michigan winters make driving conditions difficult and dangerous.
Students may speed on slick roads to get a good spot, increasing accident risk.
Snow buildup already makes spots hard to identify; designated spots at least provide consistency.
Without designated spots, snow-covered lots will become even more disorganized.
Students in Co-Ops or dual enrollment programs may arrive at school midday and struggle to find parking.
These students already have long commutes and tight schedules—extra time parking increases tardiness.
General student tardiness and attendance issues are likely to worsen without a guaranteed spot.
There will always be students who are going to be tardy or absent; this will only hinder those who do prioritize getting to class promptly.
Disagreements over parking spots may lead to drama or conflict.
Students may refuse to pay for parking passes but still use the lot, leading to overcrowding.
More cars than spots will lead to students parking wherever they can, causing chaos and fairness issues.
Losing the tradition of seniority in parking will hurt student morale, especially among rising seniors.
Students with accessibility needs may lose guaranteed spots, risking daily complications.
Spots have already been guaranteed to some students.

As a former Dow high student, if it weren’t for assigned parking spots, I’d be late every day. At the very least keep the front parking lots assigned and then keep the band lot open or something. Unassigned lots is a recipe for traffic issues and attendance issues. Bad idea.
As a recently graduated Dow High senior, I have seen my fair share of crashes in and around the Dow High parking lot. A lack of designated parking spaces WILL NOT make the parking lot any safer, instead increasing the likelihood of drivers making unsafe choices.
As someone who at least fifteen minutes (more in the winter) away from school and someone who is dual enrolling next year, getting assigned parking is crucial for me to arrive on time, get enough sleep, and keep my anxiety about parking/being late to class.
I believe that certain students who have out of campus programs, such as Co-op and Dual Enrollment will have a difficult time accessing a parking spot and this is extremely dangerous and could cause unnecessary fights between students. Sure most students don’t wanna pay for a space, but it’s better than a parent or yourself paying for damages from an accident.
i think that unassigned parking will result in more tardiness due to the fact of students having to look for available parking spaces. also what happened to seniority. i’m now a senior n it has always been that seniors get first dibs because they are older. all of the senior class has been waiting n moving up the line waiting for this n i believe it is unfair to take away. i think unassigned parking will result more havoc n chaos
Please don’t
As an alum who drove to school for three years, I know how insane the parking lots are. Undesignated parking would make it so much worse.

Assigned parking spots give students a sense of responsibility and ownership. It can make mornings less stressful, since no one has to rush or compete for a space. Students can feel more comfortable knowing their spot will always be there, and it encourages everyone to arrive on time and follow the rules. It also helps staff easily see which cars belong in the lot.
