When women are talking about feminism, we are not doing it to join a trend or to be a "social justice warrior." I promise you. It is about our actual lives being shaped by misogyny; the beliefs of this prejudice against woman sewn into our brains since childhood. This is not to look like we stand for something, or for the rush that comes with joining a political debate. These are our fucking lives.
As you can tell by the title of this petition, the goal of this page is to shut down the twitter account @MeninistTweet. Despite it's bio claiming all things tweeted are said out of sarcasm only, the account has obtained over 824,000 followers; all of whom have a daily habit of mocking the movement of feminism.
This account may be a joke to the owners and it's followers, but it is extremely distasteful and offensive. Perhaps the two owners (who are both white teenage males, might I add) do not realize the message they are sending to others, which only increases the importance of shutting it down.
The mockery of feminism is the farthest thing from funny, for it sends the message that the livelihood of women is not nearly as important as the livelihood of men. As a feminist myself, I find this popular twitter page discouraging to the equality of all sexes. That is the ultimate mission of feminism; equality. It is as simple and complicated as that.
By signing this petition, you are making a difference in the way equality is seen socially. Although it is just a twitter account, it is much more powerful than these two owners must realize.
Stand for what is right, even if it may seem like an unpopular mindset within your peers. #YesAllWomen
Disclaimer: I am fully aware that there are much greater issues of oppression and inequality than those mentioned in this petition. But as a seventeen year old girl, I am looking to make a difference in the places that I can, even if they may seem small now. Together we CAN make a change, and I can guarantee that this is not the end of my journey with feminism. The missions will simply get bigger and greater. But for now, do me and your fellow women a favor by helping deactivate this incredibly offensive social media account.
