NY State charges every single cell and wireless phone user $1.20 a month in a 911 surcharge. These funds were supposed to go to upgrade and maintain the county's Public Safety communications, 911 and emergency dispatch centers.

Instead, these funds go into the NY State general fund. Your 911 funds are being spent on hotel rooms, new staff cars, clothing, dry cleaning and anything else the state wants to take the money for.

Meanwhile, the 911 Dispatch Centers that the public relies on for fire, law enforcement and emergency medical services rot away because the counties can't afford to keep up to date with current technology or sometimes even maintain them.

This is an outrage! The NY State government is willing to put you and your families at risk so they can keep spending. All 911 funds should stay in the local counties where the money is collected. Now, the counties have to compete for a fraction of all the money collected, and you're supposed to be grateful if you get any of your own money back to work for you in your community. This should be criminal.

Sign this petition and tell NY that our families are worth more than their out of control spending habits. When the next disaster strikes, and you call 911, it needs to work, everytime.

Support, share and forward this petition. Public Safety can't be a political ploy used to tax us under a lie to pay for the outrageous spending in Albany!

I was just reading through the notes people are leaving here and honestly the stories about dispatch equipment failing when it matters most are keeping me up at night. It is wild how Albany treats our emergency money like some sort of personal slush fund for dry cleaning while our own local operators are stuck using outdated tech that literally puts our lives on the line every single day.

Make sure our surcharge monies for cell phones go to upgrade and maintain our 911 infrastructure !! I agree that this should be against the law that the monies are going in to the NYS General Fund, not acceptable !!

Joe Gilbert had an affair with a deployed Soldiers wife. He is not someone who should be voted into political office! He has shown poor judgment in his personal life and it would only stand to reason that he would show poor judgment in any time of political office!

Keep the money local where it belongs !! My taxes should be for our community safety not for state bureaucrats to waste on whatever they want.

911 equipment is outdated. Stop diverting the surcharge money to the general fund. Its criminal.

Albany needs to stop treating our emergency funds like a piggy bank. This is total theft and my family deserves better when we dial 911.

End the delay of getting 911 call takers the tools they need.
