I would like to see a requirement that after having a screening mammogram women in British Columbia be notified if their breasts are dense. Once aware that they have dense breasts, women can then talk to their doctor about what further testing may be done so that cancer can be identified at an early stage.
Mammograms miss cancer in dense breasted women as cancers appear white and dense breasts also appear white. This makes the mammogram extremely difficult to interpret. Premenopausal women are more likely to have dense breasts and this may account for why about one in four cancers are missed in women between the ages of 40-49.

I am currently compiling these personal accounts to present alongside our petition to health officials. Understanding these individual experiences continues to reinforce why this change in policy remains so necessary.

Just happened to see on news tonight. I'm now 51, diagnosed last month with stage 3 after years of clear screening, doctors say I have very dense breasts and probably started in late 40's. They reviewed my last mammogram and could see nothing. Thank you thank you for bring this to light !!!!. I'm posting to facebook too.
I fully agree. Screening mammography needs to inform women if their breasts are dense. Otherwise the resources spent on this screening is wasted as the results not only may be deceiving but indeed detrimental to those who receive a false -ve result.
My mom just found a lump in her breast and went for a mammogram and the lump did not even show up. After a further ultrasound and biopsy, it turned out to be cancerous. Scary that women can feel safe using mammogram when it is clearly not an ideal screening tool for all women.
Any argument against this is um-believable The cost to the person and their family in grief and suffering and other losses who develops this disease and society who has to pay for more advanced and invasive treatments is exponentially higher than adding a CT/US option to screening when required.
I also have dense breasts and was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 1/2 years ago. I was lucky to have been followed since 1991 with regular mammograms as well as ultrasounds. My cancer was Stage 1 and I credit the ultrasounds for finding it at that stage.

thanks for bringing this to my attention. I was not aware of this, even though I have dense breasts. It has never been mentioned at any mammogram I have had (every two years). Thanks, and good luck.
