Opposition to Proposed Parking Charges on Barry Island
To: [email protected]
Dear Democratic Services,
I am writing to formally oppose the proposed on-street parking charges for Barry Island.
These charges will have a significant negative impact on local residents and businesses. As someone who frequently visits Barry Island, I believe this decision will:
Limit my ability to visit and enjoy the area.
Deter visitors, affecting local businesses that rely on regular footfall.
Add unnecessary financial burden on residents who already contribute through council taxes.
It is deeply disappointing that the same individuals who opposed such charges in 2019 are now advocating for them. This reversal undermines trust in local governance.
I urge you to reconsider this proposal and prioritize the interests of residents and the local economy.
Sincerely,
Cleona Jones

I'd like the council to declare where the parking revenues are being spent.

I am disgusted. As a local resident you are essentially pricing people out of staying in their locality to shop and/or spend leisure time.

As with the charges at Porthkerry and Cosmeston this is penalising residents who don’t live within walking distance and putting a price on accessing nature.
As for charging for on street parking, apart from again penalising residents of Barry, it will actually clog up parking as people can park all day.
If they insist on charging it should be a much cheaper rate, 50p per hour say - the council would still make money, the same if not more as people who would be put off by £2.50 altogether may pay 50p a few times. There should also be the option for one hour

As a runner I frequently run from the Island. I believe that on road parking charges would reduce the feasibility of exercising outdoors at Barry Island for some individuals. This will in turn have an affect on the health and wellbeing of these individuals. As social care is such a big proportion of the council expenditure making changes that long term affect the health and wellbeing of its population is not cost effective.

Disgraceful. At a time when strife is high! So many households barely keeping food on the table and a roof over their heads. Their only escape from their worries is to head to the island for some peace and freedom within. Mental health issues are at a high! You want to take more of what many have not got to give!!! Always about the Money

An un fair fee for the less fortunate families that can’t afford to pay for days out. Like visit to the beach or a stroll bay the sea.

Last thing we need now is more restrictive access for Barry residents.
