Tell your lawmakers to protect the civil liberties of ALL people in our state and support Senate Bill 5173 and its companion bill in the house, House Bill 1744. This policy will allow people of faith and religious backgrounds all over Washington State to take days off to celebrate their religious holidays. Currently, most minority faith communities are not permitted to take days off from school or work to honor their holidays when they don't align with the Gregorian calendar.
SB 5173 and HB 1744 will allow students (K-12 and college) excused absences for religious purposes and give them the opportunity to make up work when absent for reasons of faith/religion in school.
and
SB 5173 and HB 1744 will allow employees of faith to be exempt from work for up to 3 days (1 paid day and 2 non-paid days) for celebrating their religious holidays.

Reaching this milestone feels heavy given how long we have been fighting for these basic rights. I am worn thin by the lack of progress from lawmakers but seeing your support keeps me moving forward.

This is what America is about; religious freedom, tolerance and respect between people of different faiths and convictions.
JUSTICE FOR EVERYONE. RELIGIOUS FREEDOM ISNT JUST FOR SOME PEOPLE.
it is outrageous how the minorities are required to pay same taxes as everybody else but without the religious freedom.
my kids always miss out on family things because of school exams. this change is way overdue.
its so hard to explain to my boss why i need a day off for my holiday. hopefully this makes it easier for everyone.
Important for people of all religious backgrounds in a pluralistic society!

This will be great for all of us to practice our faith and celebrate. It helps retain our culture. Ever since i've moved to the US 11years ago, relegious festivals aren't the same. The children don't get to experience the joy with friends. Many of my friends have to work and sometime i have to work on the days of EID as well :(.
