The Anglophone Library of Montpellier (Bibliothèque Anglophone Montpellier) was abruptly closed by the University Paul Valéry on Jan. 1, 2010, with no advance notice given its hundreds of users. The reaction from the community was swift and immediate: we want our library back! After a meeting of concerned people on Jan. 12, a number of plans were put into motion. On Jan. 15, the local cultural adjunct, Michael Delafosse, met with two of these concerned people and said that the city had been caught unawares, referred to the library as "a treasure," and said that it was essential that everyone be made aware that numerous people want this unique institution to survive.    The purpose of this petition is to register the number of people, both here in France and in other locations, who would like this library, used by residents and exchange students alike, to remain open and accessible to all, and to keep its present collection intact. If you support the idea of a lending library of English-language books in Montpellier and would like to see the existing one reopened, please sign this petition.

I just looked at the screen and saw 100 names on the list which feels surreal because I was honestly just hoping a few friends might click it. This place really is a treasure and I keep thinking about all those bookshelves sitting empty right now while we try to figure out what happens next.

Spent so many hours studying here. Such a huge loss for the city culture. Hope they come to their senses.

Ridiculous decision. Where are students supposed to find resources now? Keep the collection together!

This place was my only home away from home when I first moved here. It is just cruel to shut it down so suddenly.
