An education taskforce has proposed to reduce Playcentre funding by nearly 70 percent. It is a recommendation that has many parents up in arms and could mean the end of one of New Zealand’s oldest models. Karori Playcentre in Wellington was the first, set up by mums who believed group play would enhance their children’s social development.It was a model so successful that it was adopted internationally. Now, there are 450 centres with more than 16,000 kids. For the past few months an education taskforce has been reprioritising early childhood education and Playcentre along with Kohanga Reo and other parent-led centres are not recommended by the taskforce as a priority. In fact, the taskforce wants to reduce their Government funding by nearly 70 percent. Shut out in the cold is how Playcentres across the country are feeling. They have one week left to make submissions to the taskforce’s recommendations.

The past few days have been spent fielding messages from families who are terrified about what this funding cut will mean for their local centers. I am tired of the silence from the taskforce but we are continuing to prepare our formal responses to their heartless proposal.

The momentum behind this effort has grown into something I honestly did not think possible when we started. It has been a long and exhausting road but seeing so many of you join this fight keeps me moving forward.

STILL CANT BELIEVE THEY ARE TRYING TO CUT THIS. so many families will be left with nothing. very sad.
My kids grew up at playcentre and it is the best start they ever had. dont take this away from the next generation.
Ridiculous idea. Playcentre is way better than any daycare ive looked at. Keep the funding where it belongs.
Fixing things that arent broken again. These centers are the backbone of our community. Hands off our funding.
My grandson loves his playcentre days. Its the only time he gets to learn just by playing like a kid should. Just leave it alone!!

Playcentre is invaluable as an educator of children and their parents. We should be promoting rather than demoting their inclusive, play focussed early education !!!
