We the undersigned seek an immediate Congressional Field Hearing with the Army Corps of Engineers to answer for the destruction of our public beaches caused by their jetties.
The Army Corps is entrusted by Congress to “reduce risks from disasters” and protect our beaches. Instead the Corps built rock jetties to secure selected private lands and commercial enterprises, fully recognizing in advance that their jetties "will result in erosion…[and are] adverse to the public interest.”
Now as predicted by the Corps itself, federally funded jetties have destroyed miles of public beach, resulted in the loss of over 200 homes, condemned habitat for endangered species and other wildlife, and caused countless millions of dollars in damage; and after over 30 years of study and $30 million of taxpayer funds, the Army Corps of Engineers still cannot tell Long Islanders when it will finish the Fire Island to Montauk Point Study, and begin to fix the damage it caused.
Without an active restoration project, ocean front communities are at increased risk from catastrophic storms and erosion with little or no ability to protect these critical public assets. For these reasons, We, the undersigned, demand a hearing and definitive action to restore our shorelines immediately.
