Save Millerton Cave
The purpose of this "Petition" is to bring attention to the plight of America's most unique granite cave system, andto try to protect it from destruction. You can help!
The MillertonLake Cave System is perhaps the world's best example of a granite cave created by the process of corrasion. It is almost a mile long, and its beauty and uniqueness are unmatched. A year-round stream runs through the cave, and has created many deep pools of water, small waterfalls, and amazing formations, all carved out of solid granite rock!
Unfortunately, the Bureau of Reclamation has proposed a second dam site, not far from the existing Friant Dam at the Millerton Lake Reservoir in Fresno County, California. This new dam site would be located atTemperance Flats, which if built, would flood the San Joaquin River Gorge and the Millerton Lake Cave System forever!
We are opposed to the destruction of Millerton Cave... Please help us, and sign our "Petition" below,for the protection of the MillertonLake Cave System.

The Bureau remains silent while the threat to the gorge hangs over us. I have been spending my nights reviewing the engineering reports and looking for any opening to stop the flooding. It is draining work but seeing the cave remains worth the cost.

Please save the lake , me and my wife Vanessa have been going there since we could walk.

I love this cave system and have been exploring it for over 30 years, loosing it in the name of water storage would be tragic?
The public can now comment on the Bureau's draft EIS for the Temperance Flat Dam, which would flood Millerton Cave and the San Joaquin River Gorge. Go to www.friendsoftheriver.org for information on submitting comments.
