The NCDOT officially confirmed today that they have abandoned the proposed road widening and tree removal plans for Midland Road. I have requested the formal withdrawal documents and will ensure these are archived for public review. Thank you for maintaining the pressure that forced this policy reversal.

STOP NEEDLESS NCDOT DESTRUCTION OF ICONIC HISTORIC MIDLAND ROAD, our five-mile avenue lined with towering longleaf pines - one of the most beautiful avenues in the United States. STOP NEEDLESS WASTE OF OUR TAX DOLLARS, destruction of our quality of life, heritage, and economy which is based in the unique beauty and character of the area.
-- There is NO DOCUMENTED SAFETY JUSTIFICATION for tree removal at the entrance to Southern Pines, or a roundabout at Hwy 22 or urban superstreet ramps at Hwy One, PER NCDOT MIDLAND ROAD CORRIDOR STUDY SHOWING LOW ACCIDENT RATES -- AT EVERY INTERSECTION AND AT HWY ONE RAMPS -- AND LOW INJURY RATES ON MIDLAND ROAD.
-- There is NO DOCUMENTED SAFETY JUSTIFICATION for major tree removal, crossover closures, road widening for new intersections at multiple points (five hundred linear feet tree removal at each), per NCDOT Midland Road Corridor Study showing no unusual accident incidence.
-- TREES DO NOT CAUSE ACCIDENTS; incompetent drivers cause accidents. Midland Rd accidents in 5-year period (less than half with injuries) were mainly in treeless sections of road, documented.
-- COST-EFFECTIVE OPTIONS include more stop signs, stop lights, street lights, lower speed limit with enforcement. Roundabouts are inherently hazardous. Trucks should not be allowed on Midland Road. There are alternate routes in all directions.
-- Midland Road must have NATIONAL PARK/SCENIC BYWAY PROTECTION.

Petition speaks for itself. The only areas requiring attention are near Carolina Eye Associates' entrance/exit and Pinecrest Plaza-Morganton Rd entrance/exit - neither of which requires any tree destruction whatsoever!
I live on Midland Road and I see people run stop lights several times a week! The trees are not the problem. Destruction of our ecosystem should be an absolute last resort. Lowering the speed limit to 35 makes the most sense, for safety and for budget.
40 Inverrary Rd, Pinehurst I drive Midland Rd on a daily basis. The only time I see a problem is when a driver is texting or on their phone and not paying attention. Lowering the speed limit would be the ONLY change I would approve.
Retain the charm that has attracted many of us to this wonderful city. The tree-lined Midland Road has the history and charm reflecting the heritage of this area. Frank Roehl 20 Talamore Drive Southern Pines, NC
Trees do not cause accidents; poor driving does. Have driven this road at least 3 times per week for 17 years & never witnessed an accident scene. There is NO justification for destruction of this beautiful and iconic stretch of road

Midland Road must stay as it is because it is unique and as safe as any other roadway. Destroy it and destroy the character of the Sandhills. I moved here because of Midland Road's unique charm. 1
