Newcastle Borough Council has announced that it intends to sell off this and other public green spaces in Newcastle in order to plug a hole in its finances. The Council has indicated that this green space will be considered for disposal for a housing development.

Local campaigners and activists, Tony Cox and Lucinda Wing and local Councillor, Simon Tagg, believe it should be preserved as a public green space, not turned into a housing estate, and they'd like to hear your views.

The council remains silent regarding our concerns about Gallowstree Lane Green despite the growing pile of messages I have sent their way. I am exhausted by the constant uphill battle against their indifference but we are not backing down yet.

New homes are important but should be looked at on a case-by-case basis and the public and local community should be consulted. This area of land is very well used by the community and is especially important for people who walk their children to nearby Westlands Primary School and for elderly residents in Aspire Housing who use the footpath as a cut-through to nearby shops.

The green space is very precious and is much needed to the local area, the path through the land is also vital. I understand that the path will remain but I cannot imagine it will be as used as it is now if it passes through a housing estate.

We feel it would be a major inconvenience to have a housing estate along the main route children take to the infant school and nursery. It could also add to the danger cars present.

As usual no thought given to the consequences, ie loss of trade to shops & safety aspect. Further to walk round for elderly & children & more roads to cross. What was a previous suggestion, that's right, demolish the garages at the back of the shops & build houses effectively closing most of the shops down as they use the garages for storage.

This is a vital space and should not be built upon

This land provides a safe environment for local school children, the playgroup and elderly residents who need easy access to shops and the local bus.
