Forest House Psychotherapy Clinic has been threatened with closure in the latest round of NHS cuts. The proposal was made with no consultation of patients, referring GPs, consultants, or members of the public. The closure would leave hundreds of vulnerable people without access to vitally important services.
We need urgent action to ensure a fair consultation process, one that puts patients' needs first.
Forest House Psychotherapy Clinic, part of the Psychological Therapies Department based at Thorpe Coombe Hospital, Walthamstow, London, has been providing longer-term psychodynamic psychotherapy for 50 years. The Clinic has an excellent reputation for treating troubled and complex patients for whom other shorter-term treatments have been insufficient.
It looks like the NHS plans to phase out longer-term psychodynamic psychotherapy treatments under the guise of 'budget cuts'. Under the cover of 'natural wastage' and 'restructuring', and by employing badly thought through consultation processes, the NHS is on a slippery slope to making the provision of vital long-term mental health treatment within the NHS untenable. This goes against the NHS's core ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, particularly the most vulnerable people in society.
Those who sign this petition demand a fair consultation process, and show their support for psychodynamic psychotherapy remaining part of the range of effective treatments offered by the NHS.
