Save the Cumberland Infirmary – Protecting Carlisle Services Protecting Carlisle’s Future

It has been recently reported that The North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust is planning to merge with or be taken over by another trust because it cannot meet the criteria to achieve ‘Foundation Trust’ status by the Governments deadline of 2013/14. Health Care Professionals, Trade Unions and local users of the NHS believe that a merger would inevitably mean future funding cuts that would be disproportionate to the residents of Carlisle and North Cumbria. This would result in Cumberland Infirmary becoming little more than a glorified cottage hospital unable to deliver the healthcare needs of its local population. Job cuts to the local NHS would damage the local economy and seriously debilitate any future growth in the city of Carlisle. In light of this we pledge our support for Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary and its staff and call upon the Coalition government to give the NHS Trust more time to achieve Foundation Status and give a solemn pledge that under no circumstances will the Cumberland Infirmary lose any of its key services or departments.
