The Housing office finally backed down and the common rooms are staying exactly how they are which is honestly such a huge relief (my phone has been blowing up all morning). I still keep thinking about how we were actually worried those rooms would get gutted but we showed them …

Don't let Zahm's common rooms die. The Office of Housing is considering eliminating the 8-Mans, and making it impossible to pick the 5-Mans, 4Apartments, and Challeys with one pick. Sign this and send it on to Zahm Alumni. If we can get Zahm men from the past 25 years to sign this, we can easily reach 1000 signatures and make a difference. Help save the common rooms. E-mail [email protected] with any questions you may have.

I never thought I would see this much energy behind saving our rooms but it is honestly surreal to see everyone reaching out like this. It really hits home when you think about all those nights in the 8-Mans and the way our old halls shaped us so please keep tagging your friends because the housing office needs to hear us loud and clear.

This is a shame that we even have to make this petition. Zahm is known for having the best community on campus. The common rooms really helped me find friends freshmen year. I have life long friends in every class due to the rooms. Please for the sake of the freshmen, do not get rid of the common rooms.

I am a junior living in St Edward's Hall and will be an RA in Steds next year. Housing tried to do the same thing to us two years ago with our characteristic lofts and it is not right. They are disingenuous and disconnected from the heart of the campus. I hope Zahm gets to keep their 8mans

"Zahm has always been outstanding among the many halls at Notre Dame. Zahm always had, like the Germans call it, zeitgeist. They have a spirit, a kind of feeling and character, a kind of daring... I'm very lucky to be adopted as a part of the family by Zahm." - Fr. Theodore Hesburgh

This attempted change by Housing is fundamentally opposed to the University's mission and would ultimately transform ND's greatest dorm into the type of apartmentment-housing you find at secular universities around the country.

Getting to know and taking advice from the upperclassmen living in the common rooms of Zahm made my transition to college easier than I could have imagined. I am afraid that taking away these gathering spaces would ruin these invaluable relationships for future freshmen classes.

I'm an '05 Zahm alum. Some of my best memories at ND are from the Zahm common rooms. The common rooms were home to great conversations, late night pizza, and occasionally even homework. The Zahm (and ND) community would not be the same without common rooms.
