The Council confirmed today that weekly pickups are returning for good. Having a house full of nappies meant this issue felt impossible to ignore, but you all helped force their hand. I am relieved that our neighborhood can finally breathe a bit easier.

Lake Macquarie Council have announced that, from 30 July 2018, they will stop picking up our general waste bin on a weekly basis.
This decision is to the detriment of families who utilise sanitary devices (nappies etc.), residents who have medical needs, residents with large families, and some members of our disabled community (as referenced in Councils own reports!).
Taking away weekly bin pickups will lead to smelly bins (think of nappies and prawns!), overflowing bins, and rubbish being dumped in our parks and waterways.
Council should be recognising and supporting the needs of our community, particularly those who are most vulnerable. Lake Macquarie Council should not be removing services, and penalising those need services the most.
Sign our petition, and help us let Lake Macquarie Council know that they must reverse this terrible decision!

My own home is already struggling with the overflow and I know many of you are feeling the exact same pressure. We are nearly at our next milestone and we need a final surge to force the council to acknowledge how many families they are failing. I have been hearing from so many of you who are already worried about how you will manage your household waste. The council thinks this is just a minor logistics change but they clearly do not understand the reality of living with nappies or medical supplies in the heat. We are keeping the pressure on because our neighborhood cleanliness and health are not negotiable.

When i lived in the uk it was changed to fornightly. It was disgusting. The backyard stunk & became unuseable. We would get maggots, rats & seagulls. Worst idea ever & encourages fly tipping of general waste.
It just is not good enough to get half of the service and pay the same rates. Per dollar of land value, rates in Lake Macquarie LGA are dearer than rates in Sydney. Council should be justifying its expenditure to ratepayers.
This will lead to rubbish over flowing into the wider community. Perhaps the new tourist advertising campaign will read " Come visit beautiful Lake Macquarie. Enjoy the stench and the vermin!"
What happens with ppl with dirty nappies in a bin in hot weather (which is most of the year) a week they stink. 2 weeks will be disgusting. Food waste is not an issue when compared to nappies etc
I am a family of 6 about to be 7 with a newborn on the way we only use one bin as we recycling everything we can and still fill our green bin weekly I am not happy about this as I will end up with rubbish build up around my house which is in healthy for my family
This is the first year I have ever been bothered by maggots. Only since the change in pick ups by council.
The amount of food scraps that I place in the green waste bin is only a fraction of normal household waste I place in normal waste bin. It would be in the order of 5% on my weekly waste. I applaud the idea of recycling and sending less waste to landfill but if the amount of food waste is as high as suggested by council modelling then the answer is educating the public on food wastage. I would be inclined to think that the council's modelling of proportion of food waste in total household waste is way out.

Unacceptable! This is an essential service, and requires weekly servicing. People will resort to illegal dumping. This will impact our environment, our waterways and our native animals. This is a backwards step in relation to the conservation of our local flora and fauna.
