We, the undersigned, completely reject the conclusions of the “The draft proposal” public consultation which has identified for potential closure seven of the Walsall’s libraries.

We believe libraries are an important part of the communities they serve and perform a much wider social function than the simple lending of books. The opportunities this Council service has provided to previous and present generations are almost immeasurable.
The local library also continues to give access to a world of knowledge and experience for many disadvantage people in our city. Something they would otherwise be denied.

Accordingly, we call on the Mayor to give a categorical assurance that he will not support any move to reduce library provision, and will work with officers and users to keep all threatened branch libraries open.

Updates

December 8, 2015

The feedback from local residents has been overwhelming because these libraries are the backbone of our neighborhoods. Please email your local councillor today to tell them that closing these branches is unacceptable. We need you to keep pushing this issue until the council hears us clearly.

December 8, 2015

The momentum behind this fight is growing and the council is finally taking notice. Post this link to your Facebook feed and email your local representative today to demand they keep our doors open.

The closure of any library is a cause for concern. To close a whole group of them in one area is to deny the people of that area with something vital in our civilisation - free access to knowledge and with it, self-improvement.

My kids both go to playgroup at Pleck library and it is an absolutely amazing place. They can never do enough for people and are so good with the kids. It is places like this that build the foundations for when they start nursery and it would be completely wrong to close it.

The only time I can get a computer at Pleck Library is when its raining or snowing: thats how busy and popular this library is! Also, its a great shame Pleck Library is only open 3 days a week (less than 50%). It closes at 4pm on Saturdays!

Why take a away a facility for the future generation. Children need libraries around Walsall to help stop the anti social behaviour the towns getting.

My library while growing up and now my son's local library must stay open, look at what Birmingham did with their multi million pound investment, we're better than that

Think of the children, their future and the opportunities we had that they won't. It's unforgivable.
