Save Tucker Park

im definitely for leaving tucker park as public park and i would strongly recommend the city leave as such

Tucker park is a place that is dear to every UNBSJ residence student. It is dear to families and residence of Saint John as well and to shut it down would be a terrible mistake.

My family uses this park every day. Access to the river is one of the reasons I moved here from Ontario to work at the hospital. Selling it off for development is very shortsighted as its value would be lost to future generations.

This are must be saved from development so it can be enjoyed by all.

Save tucker park for the next generation to experience

The Tucker Park Recreation Association has welcomed the opportunity to dialogue with the Mayor regarding the future of Tucker Park. In our conversations and correspondence with the Mayor, we have indicated the following: • The mission of the Tucker Park Recreation Association is to preserve and enhance Tucker Park in its entirety (beach, rocky shoreline and wooded trails) as a public green space. • The Association cannot support any motion that includes private real estate development within Tucker Park. • It is the Association’s hope that private real estate development of Tucker Park will be removed from consideration in Saint John’s Road Map for Smart Growth. On August 8th of this year, City Council referred a motion to the Department of Leisure Services to work with the Tucker Park Recreation Association to develop a proposal for maintaining and improving Tucker Park as a public recreation area. This proposal will be brought back to the City’s Growth Committee for consideration. The Association fully supports this motion by Council, and has reached out to Leisure Services to begin working on this proposal. As the Association has indicated in correspondence with Mayor Darling: “… pursuant to City Council’s motion of August 8th, we look forward to working with Leisure Services to develop a proposal for maintaining and improving Tucker Park as a public green space. We thank you again for taking the time to listen to our concerns.”

This is a short term solution that has not guaranteed long term positive effect. Please do not waste such a gem by auctioning it off to private interest. This land was given in trust - with money to support it's maintenance. Please do NOT make this mistake. Find another way!

Hello, I've appreciated reading all of your comments. I think there is some context as to why this item is on our list. that is missing from this conversation. I'm providing a link to a Facebook video, that I posted a few weeks back. There has been no decision made and the option was to explore only at this stage. Last week, I met with members of the Tucker Park Recreation Association and appreciated this discussion. During that meeting I offered to further clarify the action item we are exploring, by adding the following language and formalizing this by bringing a motion to council. Option 1) that an option for development be explored and that this option must include recreation and no loss to the public of the beach area and 2) that an option for recreation only be explored. A report would need to be produced, that looks at the pro's and con's, including social, environmental and financial impacts. This offer was declined by the group. While I know this topic is unpopular with some, I can assure you we care and are simply trying to offer solutions to a very complex and unsustainable financial future. This land is not your asset to pay off debts.

The city is very fortunate to have such a beautiful park. Land as we know is not being manufactured. Once is it gone, its gone. People need green spaces to enhance their lives. Please make this a positive place for us to enjoy.

If we cannot rely on our public officials to look out for the well being and interests of ALL citizens, then who will? Developers already have many opportunities for development and don't need to take away lands that have been entrusted to us to preserve for future generations. There is already private development in the Sandy Point Road area and Kennebecasis Drive area. You cannot solve longterm structural financial deficits with shorterm asset sell offs. Equalization needs to be revisited if NB, and in particular Saint John, is to move forward with more sustainable financial models for a Province currently spread too thin financially to survive. How about beginning by expecting Senior City Managers, who are responsible for setting direction and policy, to actually reside in the City that provides their pay cheque?

We are so lucky to have a park in the city. It was designed by the same gentleman whom designed Central Park in New York. Having had the pleasure of spending time in Central Park, it makes me marvel at how lucky we are when I spend time in Rockwood Park and Tucker Park. Don't destroy one of the most precious areas in Saint John. If the city wants money do something with the vacant neglected houses and buildings that are a real eye sore in the city.

Please keep the park for the people

This park is very special and means the world to me and many others in so many ways. We increasingly will need places like this to find solitude and reflect in untouched surroundings. It is therefore unthinkable to even remotely consider to harm this land in any way .This park and Rockwood are more than unique all within city limits for everyone to experience. These Parks I believe belong to the citizens of Saint John and therefore should be protected and held for the future generations to enjoy.

Stop selling natural jems of Saint John!

A lot of great times and memories had at tucker park growing up. What is wrong with you Saint John just one mistake after another and your adding this to the list.

It is very hard to believe that the city would consider selling this beautiful part of the city for a very small tax revenue. This beach is a beautiful part of our heritage and should be maintained as its bequest states. Our parkland is not for sale!

You can turn parkland into housing but you can't reverse a pristine parkland once you've destroyed it.

Please preserve our green spaces! Place of tranquility and relaxation. Thank you
