As West Philadelphia continues to experience rapid economic growth, green space like the Wiota St Garden is becoming a dwindling resource.

For 30 years, the Wiota Street Community Garden has been a centerpiece of this block in West Powelton, providing open space and, more recently, fresh produce to residents and local food banks.

Now this invaluable community asset faces a grave threat, as a 12-unit housing development has been proposed for this site, meaning the end of the Wiota St. Garden.

Only one person, Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, has the power to prevent this tragedy from taking place. However, despite overwhelming opposition to the proposed development from local residents, Ms Blackwell, a self-declared champion of the community, has largely ignored our pleas to prevent the destruction of the Wiota St. Garden.

We must continue to build support for the Wiota St. Garden! Please sign our petition and tell Jannie Blackwell that green space is more valuable to you than another housing development.

Preserve this space! As a new member to the community and to philadelphia, this was one of the reasons I chose this location. Community ties are very important in the overall well being of a neighborhood.

This would be a travesty. With the amount of food insecurity in the community and the lack of welcoming spaces for POC, losing this space would do more harm than good.

The neighborhood is overrun with infill housing and lacking in green/community space. Don't allow the balance to be tipped even further.

To continue building, in the face of what the people in the neighborhood actually WANT, not only sets a bad precedent, but makes one wonder about the officials supposedly there to represent their constituents, not line their own pockets. You destroy this green, and you begin the dismantling process of a great neighborhood. I think it already has enough concrete....

I've lived in Powelton for 25 years. The Wiota Garden does not only provide much needed greenspace. It provides a space where ALL residents of the area feel welcome. It is a place where all economic and educational levels, all races and ethnic backgrounds, and all ages come together in peace. This is a resource that CANNOT be lost.

My wife spent years working for Philadelphia Green assisting community groups with community gardens. Long term successes like Wiota Street are unique neighborhood assets that are IRREPLACEABLE. Please do not allow the neighborhood improvement that the Garden spearheaded become its death notice.
