the school will pay to have planes fly over the school to celebrate its birthday, but can not have an annual play? this is tradition. generations of students have been involved with the yearly productions. this feels like a slap in the face to the LARGE community of people who take pleasure in the dramatic arts. will these resources be now put towards hockey, because nobody would be even the slightest bit surprised.

The musical is resume building, friendship making, creative learning, and suicide prevention.

Classic St Mary’s Academy. Let me guess, the extra time will be dedicated to the hockey team?

I am not a student at SMA, but as a theatre kid I know exactly how the students must be feeling. Musical theatre is very important to me, as it serves as a creative outlet, exercise, and a way to make lifelong friends. Please do not take this opportunity away from your own students. I fully support this petition, and will come to future shows if I am able.

i really enjoy doing the play every year and i’ve made so many friends because of it. it’s a way to get involved in the schools creative programs that is more involved and interactive and overall different than a visual art gallery

The musical provides a great environment for people of different interests to come together. Similar to the decline in support for the debate program, we once again see less support for the arts and social sciences. I would never imagine that this would happen to the hockey program. This is extremely disappointing.

I never would have dreamed I could be an actress but the SMA annual musical changed that point of view. These girls deserve to find themselves through the wonderful annual production, it truly is a place of family, faith and fun! Don’t take away their family, it’s a community built of faith, trust and love of the arts!!! Make our voices heard, as artists they’re very often pushed aside compared to those who play sports!!! Let the actresses hold high the torch!

The musical gave me some of the best memories I have of highschool; Stories I know I will tell one day to my kids. It also gave me a passion, and a drive to work as hard as I could to accomplish great things. It taught so many important lessons. It breaks me to think other kids are being robbed of this opportunity.

The annual SMA musical is an important artistic extra curricular activity. It has a long and successful history at SMA with a wing specifically built to support it. It is the only creative extra curricular opportunity that SMA offers to its students. I strongly urge the Board and Administration to revisit the decision to move to an alternating year performance schedule. Annual productions are the standard at high schools in Manitoba. Please keep in mind that not all students are oriented to sports and clubs for extra curricular activities. Please also share with tuition-paying parents the decision behind this move. There has been a lack of first hand information to parents.
