The recent changes to the dramatic arts program by making the school show a biennial event are a violation of the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Mary’s Academy by excluding the partnership with parents and leadership development values of the school. Our musical is something that is very close to many people at St. Mary's Academy and within the community. It is a creative outlet for students to express their talents of acting, singing, dancing, painting, choreographing, directing, hair and makeup talents and many more. Our musical is a place to make friends in many different grades and create unbreakable bonds with other students and staff that'll last a life time. For many students this is the one thing they look forward to all year. This is our Stanley Cup Game! Students make the decision to attend our school due to the fact of our outstanding Drama/Theatre program, not having our show every year, takes a large piece out of our drama program, as it is the #1 fundraiser for the drama department, as we are a self funded program. This petition is to show administration that we have the support of, not only the members of the drama department, but the student population, and that our voices cannot go unheard. We hope to show how much this musical means to us and how greatly affected many people are due to this decision. If administration continues to ignore their own policies, we will take further steps in making sure our voices are heard. Our wonderful SMA teachers have always taught us, if you are passionate about something that isn't right, stand up and use your voice!

I was looking at the screen and realized how much this has exploded because honestly I just thought a handful of us would care about the play but now it feels like the whole school is behind this. It is totally surreal to think about how these bonds we have built in the theater are actually affecting people outside our little bubble.

My daughter was in the play this year and last year. It has been a defining experience for her in her first two years at SMA. I will happily give time and money to support the play happening on an annual basis.
Even as a student who wasn’t directly involved in the annual theatre productions, I can say that this was a great event that brought the community together and helped showcase SMA talent. I think it would be a great disservice to students to discontinue the annual play.
The plays/musicals bring together so many girls of different ages (as well as same age that they otherwise were not friends with) whether they are acting or working behind the scenes❤️ The school community needs this!
The musical provides a great environment for people of different interests to come together. Similar to the decline in support for the debate program, we once again see less support for the arts and social sciences. I would never imagine that this would happen to the hockey program. This is extremely disappointing.
The musical gave me some of the best memories I have of highschool; Stories I know I will tell one day to my kids. It also gave me a passion, and a drive to work as hard as I could to accomplish great things. It taught so many important lessons. It breaks me to think other kids are being robbed of this opportunity.
Don't be dumb. Creative expression has been around since the days of the bars
This is invaluable to those involved. To cancel would be tragedy.

yeah, when we asked for more regular plays along with the musicals... this is not what we meant. If it’s too much work for teachers to run, find some alumnae / parent volunteers, or hire someone to direct. Cutting back on the one art department at SMA that gets any attention is ridiculous.
